Near Real-Time Active Fire Data from NASA on WWF-SIGHT

Deforestation

We just added a new layer to WWF-SIGHT showing active fires around the World for the last 24, 48 hours. This data comes fromt the Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS), which distributes Near Real-Time (NRT) active fire data within 3 hours of satellite overpass from both MODIS and VIIRS. FIRMS was developed to provide near real-time active fire locations to natural resource managers that faced challenges obtaining timely satellite-derived fire information.

FIRMS was developed by the University of Maryland, with funds from NASA’s Applied Sciences Program and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, to provide near real-time active fire locations to natural resource managers that faced challenges obtaining timely satellite-derived fire information.
